These young men (and women) are from India’s Marsh

At 26, Arun Krishnamurthy, an eco-warrior concerned about water, has 17 lakes against his name. His ‘army’ of 50 EFI (The Environmentalist Foundation of India) volunteers have so far cleaned 17 polluted lakes in India. Just as he wanted, his foundation has become ‘an agency that drives people’s participation.’ For example, in last August, he motivated over 100 school children to take part in a lake clean-up, collecting over 100 sacks of garbage in the end! In another instance, his group’s inspiration drove a community to pool in money to restore their local lake. So active are the girls within the EFI that they have set up a group called ‘The Environmentalist Foundation for Women’ to encourage women’s participation. Besides cleaning lakes, the group drives their cause in a variety of ways, such as awareness creation through street plays, and is setting up biodiversity parks in local schools.

Self-educated Malawi windmill boy’s battle for water and energy

In 2002, Malawi faced a severe drought that killed thousands and teenager William Kamkwamba’s family, like many others, were threatened with starvation. Unable to afford fees any more, he ended schooling at 14 but his dream lived on – the dream of bringing electricity and running water to his village. For education, he turned to the local library, where he came across a tattered text book with a wind mill. Soon, using waste such as plastic pipes and a tractor fan blade, he built a 5-metre windmill, bringing electricity to his community. In 2006, he built a more powerful windmill to pump water for irrigation. Eventually, he became the subject of a book published in the US, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. Today, in twenties, William aims to bring power, not just to the rest of his village, but to his nation, where only 2% have access to electricity.

Child refugees in Middle East dance their way to empowerment

In the refugee communities in the Middle East that the charity Bidna Capoeira works, psychosocial symptoms such as aggression, violence, hyperactivity and depression are common and children and youth need help most in order to leave behind their painful memories of conflict. To assist them to move towards empowerment and hope, the charity employs capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian art form that combines dance, music, sport and play. Social capoeira builds a sense of community and belonging and also teaches life skills such as communication, co-operation, anger management, responsibility and respect. It not only transforms the young but also provides them with a space to discuss their issues, such as anger and gender. In its six years of work, over 7,000 have benefited from its ‘dancing therapy’ in Syria alone.
